If you have a bad credit score, you certainly would like to discover how long it will take to correct your poor credit. You would like your score to be in the better credit score range than where you are at this moment. You have dreams of eventually selecting a house and would like to be entitled to a low rate mortgage loan.

Or you have a very low credit rating and you’re simply paying out a high double number monthly interest on your auto loan. You’d like to learn how much time for your credit rating to improve so that you can refinance at a reduced monthly interest and minimize your monthly payment so you can view your main balance go down every month.

get free credit scores

There are many reasons why you would certainly wish to improve your credit. It will not happen instantly but with the appropriate financial practices you can aquire a better credit standing and get better interest levels. Stay away from credit repair companies who promise they can quickly strengthen your FICO credit score by fifty to one hundred points in a month or less.

There are a lot of ripoffs these days with regards to credit score improvement. They victimize your urgent problem to economize and qualify for a home or car loans. Do your research before you provide all of these firms your hard-earned money.

Image by Getty Images via @daylife

So how do you get the better credit history ranges? Number one is pay all your expenses on time. Do not make delayed repayments. This is the most unfortunate thing you can do for your credit ratings… Over 33% of your credit score depends upon your payment record.

The following main factor is how much you are obligated to repay to your loan providers. If your credit cards and department store cards are maxed out you’ll need to get these amounts minimized to get a much better credit score. The purpose is to be below 1/4 credit card usage. So if you have a $1000 limit charge card, you want to keep your balance under $250.

The next main thing to get into the better credit score ranges is how long your accounts have been approved; longer the better. You should have company accounts in your credit file 4, 9, 15 years old and longer.

Focusing on these credit rating factors alone will greatly boost your Experian, Equifax, and Transunion credit scores. The better you get at paying your debts punctually then the more your Fico grows. You will definitely see improvements in your rating over a 6 months to a year. You may use free credit monitoring applications to keep track of your progress.

As mentioned, there is no fixed #, BUT…it’s a whole lot more than 15 points if it is the only collection on your file.

When I had one drop 1 year early on Trans Union, I got a 29 point increase. When people say that when they’re old, they don’t hurt that much…don’t buy it. Nearly 30 points is nothing to blow off.

I have a credit score of 562, and I am trying to get my credit score up. Besides the things I have no control over.. I have 7 entries from Security Finance, when I was struggling for spendable income. It’s all good, but can 7 entries be detrimental to my credit or should I call them and ask them to cut down the number of entries?
Error on my part.. score is 652.. also I found out, I have CapitalOne and they dont put your credit limit on report, so bureaus assume your balance is at 100%…ouch.. getting rid of CapOne

One of the factors that will affect your credit score is whether you have finance companies reporting on your credit file. Even a couple of accounts reporting from finance companies can adversely affect your score, as FICO considers this high risk credit behavior. They see consumers who use finance companies as unable to handle regular types of credit debt, and therefore your score is penalized.

Unforunately thats what you have to do to buy a house. So can someone explain – what is a credit score and what is a credit rating?

Are they two diff. things? how do I get a good one? I have no experience in this.

Same thing.
Some lenders like FHA do not look at the score.
So that’s why you might see the words credit rating or credit worthiness.
They go by the reports, not a 3 digit number.

I have had the same Mastercard and Visa for twenty years. The bank the mastercard was hosted by was bought by another bank. They changed the card to a Visa, changed the account number and changed the bank name. The bank my Visa is through has changed the account number twice in the last year. I’m not aware of any security problems that would have required the account number change. Would these activities, that were outside my control, lower my credit score? I’m not aware of my score being lowered, but it’s better to know these things in advance.

There is no reason it should.

I am thinking of buying a home. I would like to work on raising my credit score (currently 682) before I apply for a loan. What is the minimum score to obtain the BEST rate on a loan? How long will it take on average to raise my current score to this number if I practice good credit habits.

"What is the minimum score to obtain the BEST rate on a loan?" Most lenders set this around 720. Some lenders have it higher (750+), some lenders lower (700+)

"How long will it take on average to raise my current score " This depends on why your score is what it is. When you got your score it likely had a section of things that raised and lowered your score. Look at this section and take action as needed. The quickest way to get points is to pay off any revolving balances. Doing this will increase your score as soon as the credit card company reports to the bureaus. Late payments will hurt you for 7 years but the majority of the damage is gone after 2 years of on time payments. A paid collection is still a collection. If paying off collection accounts, try to obtain a pay for delete. You usually have to pay any outstanding collections at closing anyway.

Good luck.

i have never had a credit card, never owed anyone any money, or anything of that sort. i am getting my own apartment and they want someone with good credit. since i am new at all this i don’t know if it is good or bad. i tried checking it online but they always ask for a credit card number but as i have already stated i have never owned one. so if anyone can tell me what my credit score maybe please tell me below.

AnnualCreditReport.com is the site the allows access to your free annual credit report from each of the three credit bureaus. It’s the only site that won’t require you to sign up for monitoring services. The reports are free; the scores are not.

If you have never had a credit card or loan, you probably have no history and no score. This is not as bad as having bad credit and is much easier to overcome.

My boyfriend was thinking about purchasing a car, and his credit score was 700. He’s never missed a bill or payment, but I’m not sure if it’s a good number.
Also, his father’s score is 850, if he had to co-sign, what’s the probability he would be approved?

This should help you to understand how credit scores work..

FICO scores from 300 to 850 and Vantage scores from 501 to 990.

Here is the breakdown for both systems.

Vantage Plus system scores from 501-990.
A-901-990
B-801-900
C-701-800
D-601-700
F-501-600

FICO system scores from 300-850.
Elite-740-& up
Prime-700-739
Preferred-660-699
Standard-625-659
Sub-prime-624-& under

FICO is the only one that matters since it’s the one that all major lenders look at.

So as you can see it depends on if your looking at a true FICO score or a Vantage plus score.

As far as what makes up credit scores it’s the following;
1. Payment history (longer the better) 35%
2. Time in bureau (longer the better) 15%
3. Types of credit (mix of credit cards & installment loans) 10%
4. New credit (new accounts and inquiries) 10%
5. Debt to credit ratio (lower the better) 30%

And just so you will know Experian only uses Vantage, Equifax only uses FICO and Transunion uses both depending of which type of credit report is requested of which there are 3. The standard that people get from the Internet, the auto enhanced which only car dealers and lenders see and the factual which only mortgage people see. The last two are not available to the general public.

To have the very best score and profile people need 3-4 credit card accounts (revolving) with balances below 30% of their credit limits and 2 cars, homes, boats, motorcycles, computers, furniture or personal accounts (installment) all with good long payment history’s.

Add to this that unless you get your scores either direct from either Equifax or myfico.com your getting what’s called a FAKO score which makes it even worse because they all have their own system to calculate scores.

So as you can see it makes a huge difference depending on what type of score your actually looking at. If it’s a true FICO then 700 is good, if it’s a Vantage then a 700 is only fair.

As far as the Father goes the same would apply but a 850 is good no matter which score your looking at so the chances of them being approved would be very good.
